“Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5cases go unreported.” (See link to Administration for Community Living about ideas for organizations).
At Rosen & Spears, we often hear situations involving abuse, neglect or exploitation of seniors. As our world population ages, sadly, these occurrences are also expected to rise.
June 15th has been designated as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day since 2006.
The National Center on Elder Abuse has materials to help people be informed about issues of neglect and abuse in the elderly, and ways that you can get involved and share this information with others.
The more we understand these issues of public health and human rights, the greater becomes our ability to make changes for our senior citizens.
We encourage consumers to read about this WEAAD, and we hope that this awareness continues each and every day of the year until such a time that these issues are resolved.
