“Falls are the number one cause of injury, hospital visits due to trauma, and death from an injury among people age 65 and older. It is estimated that one in three older adults falls each year” (from www.stopfalls.org).
And, according to the National Council on Aging, “Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. ”
We are all at risk for taking a tumble throughout our lives, but the chance for getting up without injury decreases as we age.
Many seniors who experience falls have injuries such as hip fractures or head injuries that prevent them from returning home. It is also a sad fact that some elderly who have a hip fracture will die from medical complications within a year of that injury.
Falls can be prevented with raised awareness and some lifestyle adjustments.
Basic suggestions include:
Risk Assessment for Falls – seniors and their loved ones should talk to medical professionals to understand your possible risk factors, which can include health changes and vulnerability due to medication side effects.
Physical Activity – specifically to improve balance and mobility. There are many evidence based programs that can improve balance and decrease likelihood of simple falls.
Environmental Modification – check your home for potential fall hazards. Simple changes like installing grab bars in the bath area and identifying slippery places can make a difference.
Rosen & Spears hope that seniors and their loved ones will discuss how falls might be avoided, and continue to enjoy an active, injury free lifestyle.
