People want to feel some relevance and sense of accomplishment at all ages. This can become more challenging as we advance in years.
It is known that the older population is growing. According to the National Institute of Health, current estimates are that by the year 2050, the population over age 65 will represent 17% of the entire world population.
With this change, it is reasonably anticipated that the number of people with dementia will also have increased.
Sadly, as the Alzheimer’s Association reports, most people with dementia and their caregivers believe there are negative associations for those diagnosed with dementia in their countries.
Some efforts are being made to change these perception, and to offer greater outlets for people with dementia and their caregivers.
One such example is “The Restaurant of Mistaken Orders” in Tokyo. What began as a pop-up restaurant is finding greater traction. Servers at this restaurant are people with dementia, and patrons are aware that they often will not get the meal they ordered, but will still receive something delicious. The results are remarkable in bringing touching moments and a sense of pride to both staff and diners. This project also invites society to examine itself in embracing the notion that there are areas where mistakes are less important than human connections.
Museums are also developing programs for people with dementia and their caregivers. Programs are led by staff and volunteers who are educated about dementia to lead museum events that provide ways for patients and caregivers to be active and social. These programs are growing in most large cities, and in smaller communities as well. Check with your local museums to see if they have such programs, or might be able to consider starting one.
