What is a bed sore?

Bed sores, also called pressure sores or decubitus ulcers, are skin lesions most commonly caused by lack of blood supply to the skin. Factors such as friction, moisture and underlying health conditions can cause the wounds to develop more quickly. They often occur at areas of unrelieved pressure or over bony prominences, such as the sacrum (the base of the spine), buttocks, and heels. They can be rated from Stage 1 (milder irritation) to Stage 4 (skin is highly ulcerated and bone may be visible).
